2K16 Reflection

It has been a great year here at Pt England School. I have learnt a lot and made a lot of new friends. I have been at this school for 8 years and sadly this year is my last year not only learning at this school but it is my last time seeing most of my friends. I may have time to see them again but I wont be able to see them every single day. All I would like to write is thank you to all my the teachers that have taught me and thank you to my friends that have been with me all these years.

Prize Giving

Recently the years 5 to 8 had there prize giving at 7:00pm. Lots of children were given  letters that reveal to there parents they will be getting a prize. Lots on letters were sent out and lots of kids were given there prizes. But after each prize all the year levels had to perform an item of dancing to a song or songs. I am year 8 and for our item we danced to Waterfalls, I got the feeling and see you again. Our dance was ok but the best ones were the year 5 and 6. They danced to latest songs and had a lot of enthusiasm.

A Science Investigation
Fair Testing
Fill out the following table to help you explain the Growing in the dark: Plants and light experiment

Aim - what are you trying to find out?
If plants need light to grow
Hypothesis - what do you think your results will be?
I think the plants do need light to grow
Independent Variable - what variable will you change?
The amount of light each plant has
Dependent Variable - what variable will you measure?
How much soil will be in the pot covering the seed
Controlled Variable - what variables will you keep the same?
The amount of water added to the plant

The students of Room 4 wanted to find out what colour of bird feeders birds preferred. FIll out the table below thinking of which variables you would make independent, dependent and controlled.

Aim - what are you trying to find out?
What colour do birds prefer on their bird feeders
Hypothesis - what do you think your results will be?
I think the birds will be use to the colour brown because it will feel like their eating out of the tree.
Independent Variable - what variable will you change?
Different colors on the bird feeders
Dependent Variable - what variable will you measure?
The amount of food added to the feeder
Controlled Variable - what variables will you keep the same?
The size of the feeders.

INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions should have clear, simple steps so you don’t confuse the person reading them.
Can you make these various instructions easier to understand?

Pick up an egg, gently hit it against the side of a bowl and empty the contents into a clean bowl.
Take one egg and crack it open then pour it out into the bowl.
Open the fridge and take out the butter. Take off the lid. Get a knife and use it to scoop some butter. Rub the knife onto the toast.
Take your butter and evenly spread it onto your toast.
Hold the two shortest sides of paper and bend them together. Squeeze them so that the paper is now in half.
Fold the paper in half.
When you hear the sound of the whistle, move one leg in front of the other as quickly as you can.
When you hear the whistle, run as fast as you can.
When player One had rolled the die, they should hand it to player Two, who should then roll it too. The person with the highest score moves their counter first.
Go around having turns rolling the die to see who gets the highest roll.
If you want to turn on the computer, look for the round, lack power button and press it once.
Press the power button once.
Hold the handles of the scissors and cut along the dotted line, making sure you don’t hurt yourself.
Get your scissors and cut along the dotted line.
Before you start mixing the ingredients, switch on the oven and turn the dial to 140 degrees.
Pre-heat your oven to 140 degrees.
Take the lid off the glue stick and rub the glue on the tab, being careful not to get any glue on your clothes.
Rub glue onto the tab.
When you have planted your seed, pick up the pot and move it it near to a window where it will get lots of sunlight.
After planting your seeds and watering your plant. Move it to the window.

Fast Rust

Fast Rust Task
Rust

Walt: synthesis information for multiple sources.

Task
Work on this Doc together with a partner.

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.
Water - H2O
Iron - Fe.
Oxygen - O

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)
When Iron comes intact with water and oxygen over a long period of time it is exposed to rust.  Over time, the oxygen combines with the metal, forming a new compound called an oxide and weakening the bonds of the metal itself.

How could you prevent something from rusting?
In the video I had watched it shows that one of the rust experiment didn’t work because of oil. They put water, a nail and a little bit of oil on the surface. The oil stopped the oxygen from getting in so the nail didn’t rust.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.
I have learnt that oil can stop things from rusting

I have also learnt that if you add salt to water, iron and oxygen it speed up the process of rust

Lastly I never new the process of making rust but now I do.

The particles in liquid are close together and arranged in a random way.Image result for particles in a liquid
The particles in gases are far apart and arranged in a random way letting them flow anywhere.Image result for particles in a gas

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you learned from this reading.
I have learnt that everything is made out of matter. I know this because matter is something that has weight, and takes up space. Now I know that even I am made of matter because I have weight and I take up space.

I have also learnt water can be any state of matter. Water has a cycle called hydro logical cycle or the H2O cycle. This is where water can evaporate and rise to the clouds which is called condensation and when the clouds get packed it then forms rain and then precipitation which is when the water falls back to the floor and it all starts over again.

Lisa Carton - Narrative

The sun had just risen at Nurkhood Valley revealing all things that were once dark. It was Lisa Carton’s biggest day as it was going to be her longest row in her canoe in a short amount of time. So far the fastest she had rowed was 10 minutes for her 1km. But today she felt she could break that record and go for around 9 minutes. She packed her car and set off to Ducky sea.

She arrived at 9:32am at Ducky Sea, her favourite beach. Ducky sea was her favourite beach because it was where she set her record for the fastest 1km time. She screamed and rushed over to the shower to get wet. She unpacked her car and put sunscreen on. Placing her canoe in the sea she couldn’t help overhearing a group of men talking about the great waves and being careful. She interrupted them by asking, “What do you mean, be careful?” They all replied, “Just be careful and don’t go out that far!” She questioned it for a second but soon got over it. She placed her canoe in the water and hoped in clipping her paddle to her canoe so it wouldn’t drift away if she capsized.
She was about 10 metres away from land and started thinking about what the mens were talking about when on land. She soon forgot when she saw flying fish jumping over her. She stopped and stared in amazement before moving further on. She looked at her watch and saw it read 40m from land at 10:00am. This was more than enough space for her to start her 1km row. There were 2 buoys separated with a 500 m gap. So if she went to the second buoys and back it would add up to 1km. She knew this because it was where she had done her fastest time.
While on the sea Lisa saw a pod of dolphins swimming like they were in danger so she decided to follow them to see what was happening. She followed them for just one minute and then they disappeared under the sea. She sat in her canoe worried and decided to try and paddle back to the buoys.
But then something hit her canoe but she wasn’t worried because she thought it was a dolphin but then it hit again but even harder. She knew straight away it wasn’t a dolphin. She looked over her canoe and saw a long sharp fin sticking out of the water. She panicked and then the shark hit again. Lisa capsized and she quickly grabbed her canoe and hopped on top of it. She grabbed her paddle and sat in shock on her canoe. She had no clue of what to do and saw one of the men had come back because they left their clothes on the beach. She screamed as loud as she could getting the attention and the man saw the fin sticking out of the water. He pulled out his phone and called the cops telling them all about it. Lisa sat there worried and her canoe took another hit pushing her off it again. The shark had broken a sharp piece of her canoe giving her something she could use to defend her self with.
She sat scared on her canoe. She saw the shark pop his fin out of the water and without thinking she jumped out of her canoe stabbing it’s back multiple times. She kept doing it while holding onto it’s’ fin. Just in time the helicopter showed up and shot the shark with a hook gun killing it. They let down a ladder where Lisa could climb up. She sat in the helicopter in shock dazing off slowly.
She was the luckiest person to have survived a shark attack. But then she remembered she didn’t start her 1km row. Without a care she sighed with relief.

Olympics

It had been 2792 year since the first ever Olympics. It was taken place in Olympia Some of the sports played 2792 years ago was running, jumping, discus throwing, wrestling, boxing, pankration, horse and chariot races, and the pentathlon. It was held in 776 BC. The ancient Olympic Games came to an end in 393 AD, approximately 1000 years after they had first started.

When the Olympics first started only man was allowed while the woman had to stay behind and look after there home. I don't think that was fair because girls could have been stronger than the men but didn't get a chance to show it. But in know days man and woman are allowed to compete in any event.

If I was alive 2792 years ago one of the sports I would have liked to play would have been Running because It seems like the most non-death defying. There were three running events in the Ancient Olympics The stade, a sprinting race. The athletes ran from one side of the stadium to the other. The diaulos,  a middle distance race. The athletes ran two lengths of the stadium. The dolichos – an endurance race. The athletes ran approximately 20 lengths of the stadium.

There was a famous man named Milo of Croton. He was a famous wrestler and loved a good wrestle. Did you know the date of Milo's death is unknown, but he reportedly was attempting to tear a tree apart when his hands became trapped in a crevice in its trunk, and a pack of wolves surprised and devoured him. Another fact  is that Milo had a calf and every day he carried the calf but when it grew old he ate it. Last fact about Milo is that he wore the victory crown no more than six times.

Poems

Read the rhyming poem below 'School Days'
What is the big idea behind this poem?
someone is thinking about there past at school.
Why is it's layout like this?
When there is a capital letter it is the beginning of a new line. This is to show where the end of the rhyming words are.
 What does 'reminisce mean'
Remembering fun past events
How is writing 'so much like drawing'
Because every piece of writing has a meaning and detailed writing can paint a picture in your head about what it looks like.
Try your hand at writing a poem about school.

Learning in class is what we do
Sometimes it's boring and sometimes it's cool

Kids get loud and bark like dogs
And some of them even eat like hogs

Walking to TECH is always a drag
But i'm in cooking, not to brag

But aside all that, school is fun
When your not chewing lots of gum

Show not tell

The sky above was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel. The clouds started to cry and flash, like a photography camera taking a photo with the flash on. Everywhere I stepped it seemed like bad luck followed. I would see something I liked and something bad would strike. I couldn’t even walk without being hit. “sigh”

It all started the day before. I was just enjoying my daily walk, I bent down to tie my shoelaces and as soon as I raised back up a frisbee flies straight into my face leaving a patch of black on my right eye. The people who threw the flying saucer rushed over to apologise. I picked myself up and kept going and that was when a bird decides to take a load onto my shoulder. I got so angry that I turned right round and carefully strolled straight home. I decided to stop for a nice sweet treat to get my mind off of what had just happened.  When finally to top it all off I got accused for taking a ladies babies candy because coincidentally I was holding the exact same candy as her baby. “Bash” my candy goes as I threw onto the floor and ran for the hills, which was where I lived. I hopped into the showers, got changed and headed straight for the bed, hoping to sleep it off.

Now that brings me to today's breath of bad luck, literally I took in a breath of air this morning and a bug flew directly into my mouth.  I tried to make myself comfortable on my luxury chair in the living room and thought about why this was happening. I had no clue of how to stop it so I searched up some ways of how to get rid of bad luck. My first option was to create a hot cocoa with 10 spoons of hot chocolate but there was no way I was going to go near hot water, especially when I was cursed. My next option was to balance 5 books on my head while singing Walk away. I did as told and heard a big “thump!” Then I felt fire racing through my veins killing my toe slowly. I collapsed onto my chair ready to give up when suddenly I saw one more trick I could try sitting at the bottom of the page. It said to think back to something I had found and picked up while doing something. I thought back to if I had come across something I had picked up recently.

Trying to remember, I decided to get a cookie from the pantry. I grabbed a chocolate chip cookies and that was when I realized I had picked up a coin while running through the park. I ran straight to my tights I had worn that day, while running, and took the coin out. I held the coin up high and my picture frame fell onto my foot. I was sure the coin was bringing me bad luck. I walked outside and threw the coin as hard as I could. I didn't see were it landed but at least it was gone. I walked back inside ready to try out if my bad luck had vanished.

A sound came from my front door "knock knock." I raced over to the door to be greeted by my mother hold a batch of my favourite cookies, Peanut butter cookies. For once I had felt normal.

As I See It

Today room 3 have created wool and nail art with Mr Wiseman. It was really easy and we did it in 2 steps. First  step was to get our template of our star and 11 nails. We had to sit on the floor and hammer the nails in on each corner and one in the middle. Luckily we got an extra nail making it easier to hang up. The next step was to remove our template then to get our yarn and wrap them around each nail. I want to come back to this station to make the waka wool and nail art and make a big waka.

Fiafia

Tonight, Pt England School is going to have it’s annual Fiafia where all the students families can come and watch their child perform. Fiafia has been happening ever since 1996 and had been happening every second year. 2013 and 2014 are the only 2 years we had fiafia in a row. There are various cultural groups performing as well as Hip Hop, Circus Circus, Rock Band and Western. Today is just a run through of where the groups have to sit and what order they go in to perform.

This year I have decided to join Niuean. The first time I performed for fiafia I was in the Cook Island group. First we practised every Thursday but these 2 weeks we have been practising Monday through to Thursday every time after lunch. We have been practising in Miss Lavakula classroom. In my group I am a leader with Ashley, Juliet, Stevenson, Dartanian and T.J. My role is to show all the dance moves to the kids who don’t remember it and to yell luie before we do our dance.

Our Item song is Together For Generations, a haka made by Dartanians mum and a welcoming song. The last time we did it it took us 4 minutes and 36 seconds. Juliet, Ashley and I came up with some of the dance moves for Together For Generations. I am in the second row directly in the middle.

Tomorrow I am looking forward to the delicious food stalls and watching my friends performance. Sadly it’s only my sister, my dad and I going because my big sister has to stay back and look after my mum as she is pregnant.
